Private residence - Concept residential landscape design within the setting of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB)

Bringing Nature to Life Through Landscape Design

I recently had the opportunity to design a concept residential landscape within the setting of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) that harmonises with its natural surroundings. A key goal was to create an ecologically-focused design that feels rooted in the local setting.

To achieve this, I developed a layout centred around native plantings and a wildflower green roof overlooking the property. Drawing inspiration from the terrain, I situated terraces and pathways to flow with the land. One terrace, which is not walkable is planted as a wildflower meadow, blending into bordering habitats.

The hardscape materials and colours are chosen to complement and integrate with the existing landscape character, rather than overwhelm or alter the surrounding aesthetics.

The planting plan I created features a diverse palette of local trees, shrubs, perennials and groundcovers. This not only reflects the regional landscape character but also provides food and shelter for wildlife. Careful plant selection and scheduling will enable the landscape to establish and thrive.

In addition to the living components of the design, I developed an exterior lighting strategy to ensure safety while minimising light pollution. Strategic illumination will create a warm, welcoming ambiance after sunset.

To vividly communicate the design intent, I produced photorealistic CGI renderings revealing how the spaces will look and feel. The visuals provide an immersive experience of strolling through the future landscape.

This project shows my passion for crafting sustainable landscapes that regenerate natural systems. I find it deeply rewarding to translate ecological goals into beautiful, functional designs that connect people with nature.
