LVIA

A brief introduction to LVIA (Not a technical note)

Understanding how new developments can alter the existing landscape is crucial. Landscape and visual impact assessment (LVIA) is a tool used to evaluate these effects.

LVIA considers the design, scale, and location of a project and how it may impact:

  • Landscape character and quality

  • Views and visual amenity

  • Designated landscapes like National Parks

  • Cultural heritage sites

The process involves:

  • Describing the current landscape through surveys

  • Identifying key receptors like residents or recreational areas

  • Assessing the potential impact magnitude and sensitivity

  • Determining overall significance of effects

  • Defining mitigation strategies

LVIA can be part of an Environmental Impact Assessment or stand alone. Either way, the goal is minimising negative impacts on the surrounding environments and views.
